I just want to wish my brother Brendan Waters and his Magpie teammate Jerry Key best of luck in their clash against Queensland today. Bren was named captain and Jerry vice captain. I am very proud of them. They are great leaders so it doesn't shock me to see they were named in these roles. They have a lot of experience and have played in these games before so I'm sure they will be able to help any young blokes in the squad play to their potential.
"The fixture is still in its infancy, but the time is now for the NSWRL's Ron Massey Cup Reps to notch up a maiden interstate win.
Since its inception in 2015, the NSW-based side is yet to emerge victorious in the annual match against the Queensland Rangers, most recently enduring an 11-4 loss last year. That short history, says captain Brendan Waters, will act as motivation for his team tomorrow morning.
"Yeah, the coach (Mark Speechley) has been talking about it a fair bit," Waters tells NSWRL.com.au.
"We'll use that as a bit of motivation, we haven't won it.
"Trying to be the first team in the couple of years to get the win will be good. We're heading in confident; we've got a job to do up here."
The match will be played at the Gold Coast's Pizzey Park, with the best of the Ron Massey Cup taking on a similarly-selected side north of the border. While eight of the NSWRL competition's 10 clubs are represented in the side, it has not taken long for the playing group to come together as a unit.
"It's been a quick process, but I think we've all made the most of it," vice-captain Jerry Key says.
"We're all ready to rip in tomorrow.
"It's been a bit of a reuinion; I've played with and against a lot of them."
The very nature of the representative clash means that neither side can be certain about what to expect from their opposition, or which individuals will be the most dangerous. One thing is for sure, however: winning will not be easy.
"It will be tough," Key adds. "We've all been picked on form and like us they (Queensland) have all been recognised as the best in their competition."
Despite the relative unknowns of the Rangers' side, Waters is confident in his own team's ability.
"If we do everything we've been training for I think we'll be fine. If we hold the ball, complete our sets and then defend well, I think fatigue has got to take one of the two teams so hopefully we just come out on top."
